AirAsia plane debris and passengers remains believed found in sea

The hunt for a missing AirAsia passenger plane appeared over Tuesday as wreckage and dozens of bodies were spotted at sea off Indonesia, prompting raw scenes of emotion from sobbing relatives of the 162 people aboard.
The Airbus A320-200 disappeared en route from Indonesia’s second largest city Surabaya to Singapore during a storm early Sunday.
All indications now are that it crashed in the Java Sea southwest of the island of Borneo, with debris and dozens of bodies retrieved so far.
An air force plane saw a “shadow” on the seabed believed to be of the missing Flight QZ8501, National Search and Rescue Agency chief Bambang Soelistyo told a news conference in Jakarta.
Relatives of the 162 missing hugged each other and burst into tears in Surabaya as they watched footage of one body floating in the sea on a television feed of Soelistyo’s press conference.
An Indonesian warship had recovered more than 40 bodies from the sea “and the number is growing”, navy spokesman Manahan Simorangkir told AFP shortly afterwards.

– ‘I cannot bring him back to life’ –
AirAsia’s flamboyant chief executive, Tony Fernandes, expressed his grief over the first fatal incident to hit the region’s biggest budget airline.
“My heart is filled with sadness for all the families involved in QZ 8501,” Fernandes said on Twitter, adding that he was rushing to Surabaya.
Initial news of the debris dimmed the faint hopes of relatives of those missing.
“If that news is true, what can I do? I cannot bring him back to life,” said Dwijanto, 60, whose son was on the plane along with five colleagues.
“My heart will be totally crushed if it’s true. I will lose a son,” he said.
Search chief Soelistyo said all efforts were now being concentrated on the location where the “shadow” and debris had been found, around 160 kilometres (100 miles) southwest of the town of Pangkalan Bun in Central Kalimantan on Borneo island.
The town has the nearest airstrip and is not far from the plane’s last known position.
President Joko Widodo was expected in Pangkalan Bun shortly and then head to Surabaya to meet the relatives, officials said.
Indonesian officials had already been preparing relatives for the worst, with Soelistyo saying Monday it was likely the plane was at “the bottom of the sea”, based on its estimated position.
The aircraft lost contact early on Sunday about 40 minutes after takeoff, after the crew requested a change of flight plan due to stormy weather, in the third crisis for a Malaysian carrier this year.
In his last communication, the pilot said he wanted to avoid a menacing storm system, before all contact was lost.
Before take-off the pilot had asked for permission to fly at a higher level to avoid the storm but his request was not approved due to heavy traffic on the popular route, according to AirNav, Indonesia’s flight navigation service.
In his final communication, the pilot asked to alter his course and repeated his original request to ascend to avoid the bad weather.
“The pilot requested to air traffic controllers to deviate to the left side due to bad weather, which was immediately approved,” AirNav safety director Wisnu Darjono told AFP.
“After a few seconds the pilot requested to ascend from 32,000 to 38,000 feet but could not be immediately approved as some planes were flying above it at that time,” he said.
That was the last communication with the flight.
“Two to three minutes later when the controller was going to give a clearance to a level of 34,000, the plane did not give any response,” Darjono said.
– International response –
Indonesia’s neighbours had responded swiftly with offers of help.
Australia, Singapore and Malaysia sent maritime surveillance aircraft and warships to assist in the search, joining Indonesian planes, ships and scores of fishing boats scouring the waters for signs of the ill-fated aircraft.
The operation had drawn comparisons with the ongoing search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 off Australia, but Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot said it did not appear to be a great mystery, with bad weather the likely cause this time.

1,000 Boko Haram Members Seize Cameroun’s Army Base

It was yet another reign of terror at the weekend by the Boko Haram Islamic fundamentalist sect as it deployed about 1,000 fighters to take over a Cameroonian army camp and attacked five communities in the neighboring country.
Members of the sect also wreaked havoc in Tattura community, Kaduna State, killing at least 10 persons and wounding five. Tattaura community is in the Sanga Local Government Area of the state. The heavily armed group attacked the Camerounian military camp in Achigachia near the Nigerian border at around 4 a.m. After an intense battle, the army abandoned the camp, Lieutenant Colonel Didier Badjeck told Reuters by phone. “After that, the head of state ordered the air force to carry out strikes. With the bombardment, the fighters were forced to decamp from Achigachia,” Badjeck said. He could not immediately give the number of casualties from both sides.
It is the first time Cameroun has used the air force against Boko Haram. Cameroun state radio, CRTV, said the militants carried out attacks on five towns at the weekend and at least one Camerounian soldier was killed. “The attacks were carried out simultaneously at the localities of Mokolo, Guirvidig, Waza, Amchide and Makari, villages along the frontier with Nigeria,” CRTV radio reported. Boko Haram has made several incursions in the Far-North Region of Cameroun this year, killing over 40 soldiers and recruiting hundreds from mainly unemployed youths in the area. Cameroun army said last week it dismantled a training camp for the militants in northern Cameroun, arresting or killing dozens and seizing 84 children who were being trained there.
On Saturday, the Tattaura community celebrated Christmas with dance and merry. The youth and children were joined in the festivities by adults, both male and female. Suddenly, at about 10.12 pm, some strange men arrived the community, brandishing guns, machetes and other dangerous weapons. By the time the dust settled, 10 persons lay dead. Five others who were injured, were receiving treatment at a hospital. Acting Chairman of the council, Alhaji Nasiru Harande, who confirmed the attack, described it as unfortunate. Harande said normalcy had returned to the area, adding that, the attackers “came, shot and fled.” Tattaura is a community in Ancha District of Ninzo Chiefdom.
The village is two kilometres east of Gwantu, the Local Government headquarters. A community leader, Mike Sanga said the attack took place in a shop where some men were relaxing after dancing. As at press time, arrangements were being made to give the victims mass burial. However, the Police spokesman in the state, Aminu Lawan, did not respond to several telephone calls made to him.

How 30 Boko Haram Militants Defeated 1,000 Soldiers in Adamawa

News arose that in spite of the presence of over 1,000 well armed Nigerian soldiers in Mubi and its suburbs in Adamawa State, it took just a handful of 30 Boko Haram terrorists to seize the commercial city last October without firing a shot.
According to the ThisDay the development forms the fulcrum of the series of ongoing investigations and court martials by the military high command, which has accused the seize of Mubi and other towns in Adamawa and Borno States on sabotage by sympathetic army and some of their officials who rejected to fight the terrorists.
Army sources, who described what arose in several of the attacks by Boko Haram sect in the two states between September and October this year, disclosed that the militants would not have succeeded had the troops who were disposed in several of the towns and villages that were taken by the insurgents, defended the areas eagerly.
Those soldiers refused to fight, despite being better armed than the insurgents and instead ran away when only 30 insurgents invaded Mubi and its environs and captured the area without firing a shot. Instead of telling the truth they lie on social media and politicians lie on their behalf that the federal government is not arming them to fight Boko Haram.
“When Mubi was deserted, more insurgents followed suit and raided several establishments, especially banks in the town. In the Diamond Bank branch alone, they carted away over N100 million.
“The terrorists also invaded deserted military formations in Mubi and Bama (Borno State) where they stole arms and armoured tanks that they could not even operate. As such, they have been soliciting for the assistance of retired army personnel to help them to operate the tanks,” an army source informed.
Once we deployed more with civilian vigilante groups and local hunters in Adamawa, which enabled us to flush out the insurgents within a short period from Mubi and its environs.”
It should be noted that the Nigerian army had been trying to retake Mubi since the Islamists militants seized the commercial hub of Adamawa on 29 October, 2014. Troops at last recaptured the town only several weeks ago.

Why Obasanjo Tasked Nigerian Entrepreneurs

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has reportedly sent an urgent message to Nigerian entrepreneurs.
Olusegun Obasanjo
Olusegun Obasanjo
Obasanjo, while addressing participants at 2014 edition of leadership insight and experiences seminar organized by Entrepreneurs Organization of Nigeria (EON) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, urged entrepreneurs in the country not to be deterred by the myriad of challenges facing businesses today, particularly in Nigeria.
The elder states man further advised entrepreneurs to always see the abundant opportunities in the country waiting to be explored.
He used the medium to blame poor leadership for the nation’s economic plight, adding that the three factors majorly responsible for effective and responsible management of the economy or any worthy institution is leadership, leadership and leadership.
“We are witnessing a downturn in the economy now because the leadership has failed in its responsibility to deliver factors that will encourage entrepreneurship. If leadership is not okay, followership will be wrong and as they say in the military parlance there is no bad soldier but bad officers so the leadership must work to ensure the economy is well managed, that there is social cohesion, that the expectations of the youths and business leaders are met while also pursuing vigorously policies, laws and regulations that ensure sustenance of any investment in the economy,”Obasanjo said.
Speaking also at the event, Chairman of EON, Mr. Lere Baale, stated that entrepreneurs is the only way to transform the economy, and called on the Federal Government to give more support to them.
Meanwhile, the former president has been under various attacks following his newly published book,‘My Watch’.
It would be recalled that the Chairman, Organisation and mobilisation committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in South West, Prince Buruji Kashamu, has presented a book to counterObasanjo’s autobiography, ‘My watch’, which criticized President Goodluck Jonathan.
Also, Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka recently retaliated back with words concerning what Obasanjo said about him in his latest book,’My Watch’.

Egyptian writer to face trial for 'insulting Islam'

Slaughtered goats lie on the ground in Cairo on October 4, 2014 as Egyptian Muslims commemorate the first day of Eid al-Adha, commemorating Prophet Abraham's readiness to sacrifice his son to show obedience to God
Egypt's prosecutor has referred a female writer to trial for allegedly insulting Islam by criticising the slaughter of animals during a major religious festival, a judicial official said on Saturday.
"Happy massacre," Fatima Naoot wrote on her Facebook page in October during Eid al-Adha, the Muslim feast of sacrifice.
Animals are slaughtered during Eid to commemorate the willingness of Abraham to fulfil God's command to sacrifice his own son, although in the end God provided him with a sheep.
"Massacre committed by men over the past 10 centuries and followed by men each year with a smile," Naoot wrote at the time.
"Annual massacre observed because of a nightmare of one (prophet) about his son... ," she wrote in Arabic.
"Although the nightmare has passed for the prophet and his son, each year helpless animals pay with their lives the price of this sacred nightmare."
Naoot, who is Muslim, deleted her posts from Facebook after controversy erupted about them.
But a judicial official said on Saturday that she admitted during questioning that she had written them.
The 50-year-old columnist denied she had any intention to insult Islam, the official told AFP, adding she had also been charged with "making fun of the right to sacrifice".
"It is the price paid by those who carry torches of enlightenment at every age," Naoot wrote on Friday after having been informed of her trial which is due to start on January 28.
She said that in October she had posted messages on Facebook to congratulate Muslims for Eid al-Adha but "urged them to respect the offering and not humiliate it by flooding the ground with animal blood".
Egypt's constitution outlaws insults against the three monotheist religions recognised by the state -- Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
Earlier this year a female Coptic teacher was jailed for six months after parents of her students accused her of evangelising and insulting Islam.
In June, in a separate case a Coptic Christian man was sentenced to six years in jail for insulting Islam.

The Secret Meeting that Changed Rap Music and Destroyed a Generation

Hello,

After more than 20 years, I've finally decided to tell the world what I witnessed in 1991, which I believe was one of the biggest turning point in popular music, and ultimately American society. I have struggled for a long time weighing the pros and cons of making this story public as I was reluctant to implicate the individuals who were present that day. So I've simply decided to leave out names and all the details that may risk my personal well being and that of those who were, like me, dragged into something they weren't ready for.

Between the late 80's and early 90’s, I was what you may call a “decision maker” with one of the more established company in the music industry. I came from Europe in the early 80’s and quickly established myself in the business. The industry was different back then. Since technology and media weren’t accessible to people like they are today, the industry had more control over the public and had the means to influence them anyway it wanted. This may explain why in early 1991, I was invited to attend a closed door meeting with a small group of music business insiders to discuss rap music’s new direction. Little did I know that we would be asked to participate in one of the most unethical and destructive business practice I’ve ever seen.

The meeting was held at a private residence on the outskirts of Los Angeles. I remember about 25 to 30 people being there, most of them familiar faces. Speaking to those I knew, we joked about the theme of the meeting as many of us did not care for rap music and failed to see the purpose of being invited to a private gathering to discuss its future. Among the attendees was a small group of unfamiliar faces who stayed to themselves and made no attempt to socialize beyond their circle. Based on their behavior and formal appearances, they didn't seem to be in our industry. Our casual chatter was interrupted when we were asked to sign a confidentiality agreement preventing us from publicly discussing the information presented during the meeting. Needless to say, this intrigued and in some cases disturbed many of us. The agreement was only a page long but very clear on the matter and consequences which stated that violating the terms would result in job termination. We asked several people what this meeting was about and the reason for such secrecy but couldn't find anyone who had answers for us. A few people refused to sign and walked out. No one stopped them. I was tempted to follow but curiosity got the best of me. A man who was part of the “unfamiliar” group collected the agreements from us.

Quickly after the meeting began, one of my industry colleagues (who shall remain nameless like everyone else) thanked us for attending. He then gave the floor to a man who only introduced himself by first name and gave no further details about his personal background. I think he was the owner of the residence but it was never confirmed. He briefly praised all of us for the success we had achieved in our industry and congratulated us for being selected as part of this small group of “decision makers”. At this point I begin to feel slightly uncomfortable at the strangeness of this gathering. The subject quickly changed as the speaker went on to tell us that the respective companies we represented had invested in a very profitable industry which could become even more rewarding with our active involvement. He explained that the companies we work for had invested millions into the building of privately owned prisons and that our positions of influence in the music industry would actually impact the profitability of these investments. I remember many of us in the group immediately looking at each other in confusion. At the time, I didn’t know what a private prison was but I wasn't the only one. Sure enough, someone asked what these prisons were and what any of this had to do with us. We were told that these prisons were built by privately owned companies who received funding from the government based on the number of inmates. The more inmates, the more money the government would pay these prisons. It was also made clear to us that since these prisons are privately owned, as they become publicly traded, we’d be able to buy shares. Most of us were taken back by this. Again, a couple of people asked what this had to do with us. At this point, my industry colleague who had first opened the meeting took the floor again and answered our questions. He told us that since our employers had become silent investors in this prison business, it was now in their interest to make sure that these prisons remained filled. Our job would be to help make this happen by marketing music which promotes criminal behavior, rap being the music of choice. He assured us that this would be a great situation for us because rap music was becoming an increasingly profitable market for our companies, and as employee, we’d also be able to buy personal stocks in these prisons. Immediately, silence came over the room. You could have heard a pin drop. I remember looking around to make sure I wasn't dreaming and saw half of the people with dropped jaws. My daze was interrupted when someone shouted, “Is this a f****** joke?” At this point things became chaotic. Two of the men who were part of the “unfamiliar” group grabbed the man who shouted out and attempted to remove him from the house. A few of us, myself included, tried to intervene. One of them pulled out a gun and we all backed off. They separated us from the crowd and all four of us were escorted outside. My industry colleague who had opened the meeting earlier hurried out to meet us and reminded us that we had signed agreement and would suffer the consequences of speaking about this publicly or even with those who attended the meeting. I asked him why he was involved with something this corrupt and he replied that it was bigger than the music business and nothing we’d want to challenge without risking consequences. We all protested and as he walked back into the house I remember word for word the last thing he said, “It’s out of my hands now. Remember you signed an agreement.” He then closed the door behind him. The men rushed us to our cars and actually watched until we drove off.

A million things were going through my mind as I drove away and I eventually decided to pull over and park on a side street in order to collect my thoughts. I replayed everything in my mind repeatedly and it all seemed very surreal to me. I was angry with myself for not having taken a more active role in questioning what had been presented to us. I'd like to believe the shock of it all is what suspended my better nature. After what seemed like an eternity, I was able to calm myself enough to make it home. I didn't talk or call anyone that night. The next day back at the office, I was visibly out of it but blamed it on being under the weather. No one else in my department had been invited to the meeting and I felt a sense of guilt for not being able to share what I had witnessed. I thought about contacting the 3 others who wear kicked out of the house but I didn't remember their names and thought that tracking them down would probably bring unwanted attention. I considered speaking out publicly at the risk of losing my job but I realized I’d probably be jeopardizing more than my job and I wasn't willing to risk anything happening to my family. I thought about those men with guns and wondered who they were? I had been told that this was bigger than the music business and all I could do was let my imagination run free. There were no answers and no one to talk to. I tried to do a little bit of research on private prisons but didn’t uncover anything about the music business’ involvement. However, the information I did find confirmed how dangerous this prison business really was. Days turned into weeks and weeks into months. Eventually, it was as if the meeting had never taken place. It all seemed surreal. I became more reclusive and stopped going to any industry events unless professionally obligated to do so. On two occasions, I found myself attending the same function as my former colleague. Both times, our eyes met but nothing more was exchanged.

As the months passed, rap music had definitely changed direction. I was never a fan of it but even I could tell the difference. Rap acts that talked about politics or harmless fun were quickly fading away as gangster rap started dominating the airwaves. Only a few months had passed since the meeting but I suspect that the ideas presented that day had been successfully implemented. It was as if the order has been given to all major label executives. The music was climbing the charts and most companies when more than happy to capitalize on it. Each one was churning out their very own gangster rap acts on an assembly line. Everyone bought into it, consumers included. Violence and drug use became a central theme in most rap music. I spoke to a few of my peers in the industry to get their opinions on the new trend but was told repeatedly that it was all about supply and demand. Sadly many of them even expressed that the music reinforced their prejudice of minorities.

I officially quit the music business in 1993 but my heart had already left months before. I broke ties with the majority of my peers and removed myself from this thing I had once loved. I took some time off, returned to Europe for a few years, settled out of state, and lived a “quiet” life away from the world of entertainment. As the years passed, I managed to keep my secret, fearful of sharing it with the wrong person but also a little ashamed of not having had the balls to blow the whistle. But as rap got worse, my guilt grew. Fortunately, in the late 90’s, having the internet as a resource which wasn't at my disposal in the early days made it easier for me to investigate what is now labeled the prison industrial complex. Now that I have a greater understanding of how private prisons operate, things make much more sense than they ever have. I see how the criminalization of rap music played a big part in promoting racial stereotypes and misguided so many impressionable young minds into adopting these glorified criminal behaviors which often lead to incarceration. Twenty years of guilt is a heavy load to carry but the least I can do now is to share my story, hoping that fans of rap music realize how they’ve been used for the past 2 decades. Although I plan on remaining anonymous for obvious reasons, my goal now is to get this information out to as many people as possible. Please help me spread the word. Hopefully, others who attended the meeting back in 1991 will be inspired by this and tell their own stories. Most importantly, if only one life has been touched by my story, I pray it makes the weight of my guilt a little more tolerable.

Thank you.

14-yr old ISIS suicide bomber volunteer hands himself over at mosque he was sent to blow up(Photos)

hhh

a Syrian boy escaped from Isis – by volunteering as a suicide bomber and then handing himself in at the mosque he was meant to blow up.
Usaid Barho had a bomb vest strapped to his body before travelling to a Shi’ite mosque in Baghdad, Iraq where he was supposed to detonate the explosive device.
But rather than killing himself and countless others, he took the brave decision to defy his orders by unzipping his jacket and handing himself in to guards standing nearby. He had reportedly walked up to the gates of the mosque in the Bayaa district of Baghdad before telling guards he did not want to blow himself up. According to NYTimes, he said
“They seduced us to join the caliphate,“I believed in Islam. They planted the idea in me that Shiites are infidels and we had to kill them,” .If he did not fight, he was told, Shiites would come and rape his mother
The newspaper describes how he was taken to a training camp before being given a choice of becoming a fighter or a suicide bomber. He chose the latter hoping he could immediately surrender.
The teenager reportedly said:
‘I raised my hand to be a suicide bomber. If I were a fighter and tried to surrender to security forces they might kill me, with my gun in my hand.’
Usaid was reportedly transferred from one Isis operative to another as he made his journey towards the mosque before he was finally given his target and informed of his target.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia's air force was searching for an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people that went missing on Sunday after the pilots asked to change course to avoid bad weather during a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.
Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501, an Airbus 320-200, lost contact with Jakarta air traffic control at 6:17 a.m. (11.17 p.m. BST), officials said.
"The aircraft was on the submitted flight plan route and was requesting deviation due to en route weather before communication with the aircraft was lost," the airline said in a statement.
No distress signal had been sent, said Joko Muryo Atmodjo, air transportation director at Indonesia's transport ministry.
Indonesia AirAsia said there were 155 passengers and seven crew on board. It said 156 were Indonesian, with three from South Korea and one each from Singapore, Malaysia and France.
Singapore, Malaysia and Australia had offered to help in the search. Malaysia said it was sending vessels and a C130 aircraft while Singapore had also sent a C130, officials said.
Indonesia AirAsia is 49 percent owned by Malaysia-based budget carrier AirAsia , with local investors holding the rest. The AirAsia group, including affiliates in Thailand, the Philippines and India, has not had a crash since its Malaysian budget operations began in 2002.
Flight QZ8501 was between the Indonesian port of Tanjung Pandan and the town of Pontianak, in West Kalimantan province on Borneo island, when it went missing, Atmodjo told a news conference in Jakarta.
The aircraft had been flying at 32,000 feet and had asked to fly at 38,000 feet to avoid clouds, he added.
Tanjung Pandan is the main town on Belitung island, roughly half way between Surabaya and Singapore. There was bad weather over the island at the time.
The flying time from Surabaya to Singapore is usually just over two hours. The plane had been due in Singapore at 8:30 a.m. Singapore time (0030 GMT).
In both Surabaya and Singapore, anxious relatives of people on the plane awaited news.
"I should have been on the flight together with my friends," a man named Purnomo told TVOne in Surabaya.
"We, seven people, had planned to go to Singapore for vacation but this morning I had an emergency. I had my passport in hand but had to cancel the trip."
An Indonesian woman at Singapore's Changi Airport said her sister and other family members, including two children, were on board.
"No one has told us anything. We heard the news and came to the airport," the woman said before entering a cordoned-off area.
The airline said the captain and first officer were both experienced.
Tony Fernandes, chief of Malaysia's AirAsia, said he was heading to Surabaya with his Indonesian management team.
"My only thought are with the passengers and my crew. We put our hope in the SAR (search and rescue) operation and thank the Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysian governments," he said on Twitter.
The incident comes at the end of a disastrous year for the region's airlines.
Malaysia's national flag carrier, Malaysia Airlines, lost two aircraft this year.
Flight MH370 went missing on March 8 on a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board and has still not been found.
On July 17, Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.
Indonesia AirAsia has a fleet of 30 Airbus A320s. The missing plane has been in service for just over six years, according to airfleets.net.
All AirAsia-branded airlines operate aircraft made by Airbus, which has orders for several hundred planes from the group. AirAsia is considered one of the European planemaker's most important customers.

Torres has been on a two-year loan to Milan from Chelsea, but he will sever ties with the Stamford Bridge club in order to rejoin Atletico in January.
A Chelsea statement said: "The striker moved to the San Siro on a two-year loan deal in August and on January 5 he will complete a permanent transfer to the Serie A side."
Fernando Torres is to join AC Milan on a permanent basis:
The 30-year-old has scored just once in 10 games for the Serie A giants, and there is no suggestion he will remain at the San Siro.
Atletico’s assistant coach German Burgos said the 30-year-old was set to return to the Vicente Calderon.
"It (the Torres deal) is on the verge of completion and we are waiting for things to firm up," Burgos was quoted as saying in Spanish media.
"He will be a very important reinforcement for the second half of the season.
"We will get the best out of him, the same as everyone, and he knows where he is coming to."
