The Nigerian Music Video Awards is considered to be the most consistent ceremonies in Nigeria. So, who had entered the list?

Its theme in 2014 is “A World Without Violence.” So it is dedicated to further deepening the consciousness of a violence-free environment.

The NMVA is also against all form if media violence including denigration of women in music videos and other obscenities that may offend the sensibilities of innocent viewers.

Boko Haram Attacks Shani, Shooting Indiscriminately

 Insurgents believed to be part of the dreaded Boko Haram last night attacked Shani, the headquarters of Shani Local Government Area in southern part of Borno State.

The gunmen on arrival to the town had opened fire on innocent citizens and set public buildings on fire.

Boko Haram has been terrorizing the nation since 2009.

The number of casulties is yet unknown but one Baba Garba a resident of the area told Daily Trust: “The terrorists stormed Shani in a convoy of over 20 motorcycles. Most of them carried assault rifles and petrol bombs”. 

Another source, Yusuf Sabo revealed that the gunmen attacked and destroyed the Divisional Police in Shani.

He said:“The police on duty fled when it was obvious that the terrorists had superior weapons. 

“After they hurled explosives into the station, they proceeded to the town and only God knows the mayhem they inflicted on the people,” he told DailyTrust.

Nigerian Police and Army are yet to respond to questions regarding the attack.

Buhari: Don't Blame Nigerian Military For Boko Haram

Former Head of State, General Muhamadu Buhari (rtd) has said that the Nigerian military should not be blamed for not being able to crush the Boko Haram insurgency ravaging north-eastern Nigeria.

According to Buhari, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led federal government is to be blamed.

The former Head of State made the statement at the weekend in Enugu while addressing the state’s delegates of All Progressives Congress (APC) to the forthcoming presidential primaries of the party.

Buhari told the delegates that Nigerian military are ill equipped despite the abundance of wealth being wasted on trivial issues by the government in power.

Buhari , a leading presidential aspirant in APC, added that “soldiers have been complaining that they are ill equipped, in spite of the trillions spent on defence budget in the last three years.”

Buhari who was accompanied by former Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Malam Nasir El Rufai, former Minister of Information, Chief Tony Momoh, Chief Audu Ogbe, among other key officials of the party, noted that next year would be another landmark year in the history of the country.

“If you consider the foreign revenue Nigeria has generated since 1999, you will be shocked at how inefficient and corrupt PDP has been. Soldiers have been saying they are ill equipped, yet trillions have been voted for defence in the last three years,” he said.

He added: “If we don’t vote out PDP, it will vote out Nigerians and we will all be the losers. Cast your votes for us so that we can all fight this inefficiency and corruption.

Lagos PDP chieftains defect to APC

A former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Rafiu Jafojo, and some other chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos on Saturday defected to the All Progressives Congress.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that others who defected included former Lagos State Chairman, Elders Council of PDP, Dr. Oluyomi Finnih, and former state secretary of the party, Tunde Daramola.

The declaration of the new members was held at the APC secretariat on Acme Road, Lagos.

Welcoming the new members, the state chairman of APC, Chief Henry Ajomale,said they had made a good decision. He promised that the party would be fair to them.

Finnih, who spoke on behalf of the new members, said the defectors had come for the unity of the party and not to divide it.

“We took the bold decision because we see the party as a prosperous party. We defected based on the lack of internal democracy in the PDP and our aim is winning the presidential election by APC,” he said.

The state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, said that the party was glad to accommodate the new members.

Fashola urged them to ensure that the party’s interest was placed above individual interest, saying that there would be a level-playing ground.

Meanwhile, the state chapter of PDP described the defection of Finnih and his group to the APC as a welcome development.

The PDP Publicity Secretary, Gani Taofik, told NAN, “Finnih and his group have long been out of PDP. The defection ceremony today is just a charade for people who have long left our fold.

“Finnih and his group had always worked against the PDP even when they were our members. Their roles of playing moles and fifth columnists in our party have been extinguished. They had no choice but to be part and parcel of the APC, their real party.”

He advised other members of the party who were not willing to abide by its rules to exit or risk being disciplined.

Taofik said, “The Lagos PDP can no longer tolerate insubordination. It is no longer business as usual. We want to enforce party discipline to the letter.”

He, however, assured PDP’s loyal members that the party would emerge victorious in the 2015 general elections.

America Not Nigeria's Friend On Boko Haram, Gowon Declares

A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has taken a swipe at the United States on its refusal to sell arms to Nigeria to fight the insurgency by the Islamic group, Boko Haram.

Gowon, in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, criticised the US for not selling military hardware to Nigeria, saying if the US was truly a diplomatic friend to Nigeria, it should do everything possible to keep the corporate existence of Nigeria.

This, according to him, includes assisting Nigeria to fight aggression from any quarter.

The US had on November 12, 2014, defended its refusal to sell cobra helicopters to Nigeria, saying the Federal Government was free to buy fighter jets from any other country.

The State Department’s spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said, “Nigeria has purchased helicopters that originated in countries other than the US and nothing in our decision prevents Nigeria from obtaining weapons and equipment from other sources,”

Psaki had reacted to the allegation by the Nigerian Ambassador to the US, Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, that Washington declined to sell arms to Nigeria.

Adefuye had told members of the Council on Foreign Relations on November 10 that Washington was not doing enough to assist Nigeria in combating the Boko Haram insurgency in North-East geopolitical zone of the country.

He said, “The U.S. government has up till today refused to grant Nigeria’s request to purchase lethal equipment that would have brought down the terrorists within a short time on the basis of the allegations that Nigeria’s defence forces have been violating human rights of Boko Haram suspects when captured or arrested.

“We find it difficult to understand how and why, in spite of the U.S. presence in Nigeria, with their sophisticated military technology, Boko Haram should be expanding and becoming more deadly.”

But Psaki had stated that the US refused to sell the helicopters to Nigeria due to concerns about the ability of the military to use and maintain them.

The cobra is a combat aircraft with the ability to climb at the rate of 8.2metres per second. It is equipped with a 20 mm M197 3-barrelled Gatling cannon in the A/A49E-7 turret (750 rounds ammo capacity).

The spokeswoman also said there were ongoing concerns about Nigerian military’s protection of civilians when conducting military operations, adding that these had been discussed with the Nigerian authorities.

Gowon, while speaking to one of our correspondents, however, alleged that the US did same to the Nigerian government during the Civil War, when it refused to sell fighter jets to Nigeria to stop Biafra’s bomber jets.

As the military Head of State, Gowon had prosecuted the Nigerian civil war, aka Biafran War, which began on July 6, 1967 and ended on January 15, 1970.

The war was declared after an attempted secession by the Eastern Region of the country, which declared itself the ‘Republic of Biafra.’

Gowon said, “The same thing happened during the Civil War. The Americas refused to sell arms to us. I wanted them to help me with some modest aircraft so that I could chase out Ojukwu’s (Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu) B52 or B56 as they called it. That was all I wanted; not to shoot it down but to chase it away so that it does not drop bombs and kill innocent people.

“But the Americans refused to help us and they even refused to sell arms and ammunitions and the spare parts of the equipment that we got from them. And at the same time, they (America) were shipping aircraft and loads of arms and ammunition to Zaire. What sort of friends are they?

“You call them your friends and they say that they are helping us to fight terror. We don’t want their people (Americans) to come and fight the war (against Boko Haram) for us but, at least, we need the equipment.

“During my time (as Head of State), I had to go to the Russians to get the equipment we wanted in order to prosecute that war. If they cannot help us, they should allow us to go elsewhere and get what we want to ensure that we deal with this particular problem.”

A former Military Governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Umar (retd.), corroborated Gowon, while decrying that Western allies, who were paying much attention to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria in the Middle East, “have decided to turn a blind eye to what is happening in Nigeria.”

He pointed out that Boko Haram is to Nigeria what ISIS is to the Middle East, saying they both threaten global peace and security.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also backed Adefuye’s position on arms purchase from the US.

The Director, Public Communication Division, Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ahmedu Ogbole-Ode, said the Nigerian ambassador had said it all on the relationship between Nigeria and America.

“Our ambassador to the US has spoken. He did not send himself there, so there is nothing more for me to add,” he said.

The US, however, said despite its insistence on not selling arms to Nigeria, it was committed to helping the country address the threat posed by Boko Haram and other violent extremist organisations.

The Press Attache, US Embassy, Abuja, Sean McIntosh, in his response to SUNDAY PUNCH’s enquiry on why the US avoids supporting Nigeria internal wars, said his country had been working and continued to work with Nigerian authorities to provide assistance with humanitarian programmes, intelligence and strategic communications.

When asked to also explain the US policy that states America’s non-committal posture to Nigeria and to name other West African countries affected by the policy, McIntosh said the US had continued to advise the Federal Government to adopt a comprehensive approach to violent extremists.

He said such approach emphasises respect for human rights including the freedom of religion, prioritises civilian security, and responds to the needs of victimised communities.

McIntosh listed the assistance rendered to Nigeria by the US to include the provision of $19m for the vulnerable and conflict-affected households in Nigeria by the American government in 2014.

He said, “More than $7m from the US Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance supports health, water and sanitation services; the delivery of emergency relief supplies and protection activities for women and children in north-eastern Nigeria.

“USAID/Food for Peace has provided nearly $7m in emergency food assistance and the US Department of State has provided more than $5m to fund protection activities in affected areas.

“In addition, the US government provided more than $54m in humanitarian assistance in Cameroon, Chad and Niger, targeting refugee populations from neighbouring countries, including Nigeria.”

The American embassy spokesman explained that the USAID was also in the process of starting two new programmes that would address critical educational needs for both boys and girls in northern Nigeria.

These, according to McIntosh, include a ‘crisis response’ programme to be funded with about $20m to $30m. He said the programme would reach out with basic education to internally-displaced persons and others affected by the violence in the north-east, including Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa states.

“The programmes also include a ‘flagship’ five-year education programme that will strengthen systems to provide greater access and learning (increasing reading skills) for primary school children, principally in Sokoto and Bauchi, and other states of the North as conditions allow,” he explained.

McIntosh stated that two additional large USAID projects focused on maternal and child health and democracy and governance are geographically co-located in Bauchi and Sokoto states in an effort to maximise their developmental impact. He added that expansion into additional post-conflict states would be considered as conditions and resources allow.

Kanye West was spotted in Paris on Thursday, where he had dinner with two male friends at Ralph Lauren’s restaurant.  Kim Kardashian, meanwhile, tweeted that she was at sister Khloe’s house for the holiday.

Still, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have publicly seemed happy as ever. West even whisked his new bride away on a Hawaiian vacation for her birthday last month. And Kardashian has had nothing but nice things to say about her husband.

“I feel as though we’ll always be in the honeymoon period,” Kim Kardashian told MailOnline in June.“I try to treat him like it’s his birthday every single day. I think we’ll always be like that.”

So for the moment, we’re taking these separate Thanksgivings as a simple case of conflicting schedules. For all we know, Kim and Kanye could have had an earlier dinner together before he left for Paris. And even happily married couples have fights every now and then.

Why we killed policeman, took his rifle —Robbery suspects

THEY gave their names as Adams Yinus, Lukmon Raheem, Ojo Adewale and Surajudeen Dauda. They were a merciless gang who liked to leave a trail of blood after their deadly operations, even when their victims did not put up any form of resistance.

Policemen also became their targets in their bid to add to the number of arms in their armoury. But like a thief who stole the king’s trumpet and had no place to blow it, the gang soon met their waterloo as they were picked, one after the other, by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ibadan in Oyo state Police Command, led by their officer-in-charge, Eneji Michael.

At a press briefing on Monday, November 24, 2014 at the police headquarters at Eleyele, Ibadan, the police spokesperson, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, who represented the Commissioner of Police, Kola Shodipo, disclosed that the gang went to Iwo Road area of Ibadan on September 25 and snatched a car, after which they headed towards Agugu area.

On sighting a policeman with an AK 47 rifle at his duty post, the suspects opened fire on him with two guns at the same time and took away his rifle after he fell. They also snatched a Honda Accord car about a week after.

Not yet done, the PPRO said, the gang invaded an agric company at Challenge area on October 9 at about 4.50 p.m. with the AK 47 rifle and other guns, firing indiscriminately into the premises. Not only was a teenage food vendor caught in the thigh, the owner of the company was not spared as he was shot in the legs while another staff lost one of his eyes hit by bullet. Six others were also injured, as the armed robbers dispossessed both staff and clients of their money, jewelry and handsets.

In their bid to escape, the armed robbers were reported to have shot two passersby. Twenty four expended AK 47 ammunition and one empty cartridge shell were picked at the scene by the police when they got to the scene, it was further learnt.

“The result-oriented SARS operatives embarked on a painstaking investigation of the case, leading to the arrest of the suspected armed robbers on November 4. On their arrest, they jointly confessed and admitted that they killed the police sergeant at Agugu to possess his AK 47 rifle,” she added.

Exhibits recovered from them include one AK 47 rifle with number 23404, one pump action rifle with number R330771, one cut-to-size double barrel gun, one locally-made cut-to-size single barrel gun, one stainless Raven arms F.S pistol model P-25 with number 35/800, two AK 47 magazines, 14 live ammunition, five live cartridges, assorted charms and one Nissan Micra car with registration number AKD 358 SM, among others.

In an interview, the suspects opened up to Crime Reports on how they carried out their operations before they were caught. Below are their confessions:

Adams Yinus (22)

I was invited by some guys to join them in robbery in 2013. Specifically, it was one John who introduced me to robbery. We met at the hemp joint of one Alhaji Aliu a.k.a. Gbakoje at Oranyan area of Ibadan.

I was at the joint one day to smoke hemp when Alhaji Aliu introduced us to each other. Alhaji was the one who gave my number to one of the gang members, Lukman. I was taught how to shoot by John. Aliu used to hire arms out to armed robbers. He also used to work as an armourer to armed robbers. I have gone on two operations with the gang. We snatched cars on the two occasions.

I started with them by using okada to go to shops to rob traders. After some time, I decided to stop and start my business. I told John and he tagged me as a police informant. In October this year, Lukman called me and said someone gave him my number.

We started working together and we have been to two operations.  We did one at Iwo Road area. We were four with two okada riders, making six of us. We followed a man at Iwo Road and blocked his Toyota Corolla car with the bikes. It was around 2p.m. We had three guns. Lukman, Wale and I held the guns.

How we killed police

We were coming from a robbery operation in which we snatched a car. As we passed through a street, we saw policemen. The three of us fired at the policemen and one of them was hit. He fell down and one of us, Lukman, got down and picked his AK 47 rifle. The gun has been recovered from Alhaji Aliu in whose custody we kept it. We took the car to one Prince, our receiver. We were paid N400,000 for it and I got N80,000 as my own share.”

We also went to an agricultural products company at Challenge area. We were given information about the place by Lukman. We got there and asked for money. When they did not respond in time, we started shooting. We learnt many people were injured.

Lukmon Raheem (24)

I am from Kogi state. I went to prison in 2010 and came out in August 2014. What took me to prison was that one Azeez invited me for bag snatching and we were caught. We were brought to SARS and charged to court. We were remanded in prison but after four years, the judge struck the case out because the complainant said she was no longer interested in the case.

I met Yinus in September at Alhaji Aliu’s hemp joint. I told Alhaji that I needed money to start my business again and he promised to link me with Yinus, saying that I should be able to save enough after two operations. When I spoke with Yinus, he suggested car snatching and one other member, Akin, called a receiver known as Prince.

Prince asked us to get him a Toyota Corolla car and this was prompted our trailing our victim at Iwo road. As we were going with the car along a street, we saw two policemen and as they made to get up, Wale and Yinus shot at them. I was the one who picked the policeman’s gun after he fell.

Three weeks after, we went to the poultry company with the gun to rob. We got phones and jewelry. We sold to one guy popularly called Oba Sabo. He stays in Sabo, Ibadan. We sold the handsets for N120,000 and I was given N25,000. I got N80,000 from the car.

I am asking for God’s mercy. I don’t understand why I was doing all I did. I promised not to do such again if let off the hook.

Ojo Adewale (39)

I was into fish farming until I was introduced to Yinus by Alhaji Aliu at his hemp joint which I used to patronize. We snatched a Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. I joined my share to my savings and used it to buy a Nissan Micra car for commercial purpose. We had stopped working then. I went to Alhaji Aliu’s place to smoke and he called in the police to arrest me. I had already repented then.

Surajudeen Dauda (25)

I was a mechanic but also worked as okada rider and taxi driver. I am married with two kids. Wale introduced me to Yinus’ gang. We worked together to snatch cars.

I’m still suffering for failing to stop Tambuwal from becoming Speaker in 2011 — Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed regrets at his inability to stop Aminu Tambuwal and install a South West politician as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2011.

He said he is still suffering for failing in that enterprise.

Speaking on Friday at the Yoruba Unity Summit themed: ‘National Development: Wither the Yoruba,’at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Mr. Jonathan attributed his failure to the selfishness of some Yoruba leaders.

In 2011, Aminu Tambuwal, who is from the Northwest, had defeated Mulikat Akande, a Yoruba from the South West, to emerge the House Speaker.

President Jonathan said he is still suffering from that decision by the Lower House.

“One of the problems I faced in the National Assembly is that I felt the right thing should be done because our party, the PDP, has a formula,” said Mr. Jonathan, who was the special guest of honour at the event.

“We have six geo-political zones in the country and when the President emerges from one of the geo-political zones, the Vice-President emerges from another geo-political zone, the rest core offices, the Senate President, the Speaker, Secretary to Federal Government, the chairman of the party must come from different geo-political zones.

“The idea is that, whenever we are distributing board positions and some of these appointments, whenever we are appointing ministers, all these people sit to take decisions. In that case we want all the geo-political zones to be in the inner caucus that take critical decisions.

“The last time, it was difficult for me because I insisted that the Southwest must get the Speaker. Of course, I couldn’t go through with it because some of us within the Southwest didn’t want it, based on some personal reasons. I am still suffering from that till today.”

President Jonathan said that this time around, the party would work collectively to ensure that the South West gets whatever is zoned to them.

“People should not rob it from us.”

Mr. Jonathan said that the South-West play a huge role in Nigeria’s economy, noting that Lagos and Ogun States alone control 55 percent of the economy.

He added that the contribution of the two states is a reason he is committed to providing them with infrastructure such as electricity to help boost the economy.

“With unity, we can go to the moon. The Yoruba will not be left behind,” he added.

The President also said that there are some recommendations from the just-concluded national conference he would not implement immediately to avoid desperate politicians who are “even ready to kill” from giving it a partisan colouration.

In his speech, Ayo Fayose, the Ekiti State governor, advised Mr. Jonathan to always ignore the criticisms of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, adding that the retired Army General will never support his re-election bid.

“You know it more than you know me. He will never want a man with an independent mind. Mr. President, you have refused to tread the path of unconstitutionality,” Mr. Fayose said.

“You have refused to level Borno and other states like he levelled Odi. You have taken your time to respect human lives by not committing crimes against humanity. He won’t like that.

“And, Your Excellency, the more you try to curry (favour of) Obasanjo, the more he will continue to despise you.

“If you continue to curry him, we are not going to curry him. He doesn’t like people that give him respect. I plead with Your Excellency. Your second term has been concluded in heaven. Fear not.”

The Ekiti governor challenged Mr. Obasanjo to explain the N50 million shared during the third term agenda, adding that he lacked the moral authority to speak against corruption.

“I earned less than N300, 000 as governor of Ekiti State during my first coming. Your Excellency, the donation of N10 million to Obasanjo Library, what do you call that? That is corruption,” Mr. Fayose said.

“Go and look for the Code of Conduct, the forms filled by President Obasanjo and his wealth today. We knew when he came back from prison. We knew the situation, we knew his wealth when he came out.

“If you don’t speak each time Obasanjo speaks in the papers, we must reply him. When people talk and we are addressing you here, that is not the issue. If he talks again, we will give him an answer.

“You are not supposed to reply him. You are a complete gentlemen. Decorum is part of business. We are telling you again, the moment he says the next one, we will engage him. This is not a country where after serving your own tenure, what you cannot take, you are giving it to others.”
